WINTER 2018



WEEK 1: Introduction and review. Instrument Transposition basics. Creating a piano reduction from a score.

Homework: Transpose and re-write the Bach chorale handed out in class for saxophone quartet (soprano, alto, tenor, baritone) with correct key signatures and transpositions. Due Monday week 2.

In class analysis: Miles Davis' All Blues, Mozart Clarinet Concerto opening excerpt

WEEK 2: Transposition continued. Score reading. Cadence types.
Read: Kostka Chp. 10, pgs. 145-149 (cadences)
          Kostka Chp. 6, pgs. 81-90 (root-position part writing)

Ear-training: identifying all minor and major intervals within an octave. Interval identification quiz Friday week 2.

Homework: Homework: complete the photocopied handouts (from MU120 Fall quarter packet) titled Part-writing and Analyzing Cadences and Cadence part-writing, 2. Due Wednesday of Week 3.

WEEK 3: Non-harmonic tones

Read: Kostka Chapter 11

Ear-training: Prepared singing test Monday of Week 4. Examples from pg. 85 of Denise Bacon book.

In-class analysis: Stevie Wonder's I Just Called to Say I Love You

Homework: Non-harmonic tones worksheets from the class packet. Due Wednesday of Week 4.


WEEK 4: Non-harmonic tones continued

Read: Kostka Chapter 11

Ear-training: rhythm exercises. Test Wednesday or Friday during week 5 of prepared rhythm exercises.

In-class analysis: Elton John's Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word. Bach chorale excerpts

Homework: Bach chorale analysis (photocopy). Harmonic analysis (key, pop chord symbols, Roman numerals with figured bass), identification and labeling of all non-harmonic tones, and cadence identification. Due Monday of Week 6

WEEKS 5/6: Non-harmonic tones continued, Part-writing review. Midterm review. Midterm

Read: Kostka Chapter 12

In-class analysis: Bach chorale excerpts, excerpts from Kostka Chapters 11-12 end-of-chapter self-tests

Ear-training: simple melodic dictation exercises. Graded melodic dictation either Monday or Wednesday of Week 6.

Homework: no homework due

MIDTERM: FRIDAY WEEK 6

WEEK 7: four types of 6/4 chords, melodic and harmonic sequences

Read: Kostka Chapter 7 (pgs. 95-98 and pgs. 106-111)

​In-class analysis: harmonic sequences from music literature. (Vivaldi "Winter" from the Four Seasons, Elton John "Sorry Sees To Be the Hardest Word", Kosma "Autumn Leaves" "Fly Me To The Moon")

Ear-training: Prepared singing test Wednesday of week 8. Denise Bacon book pg. 95

Homework: Cadential 6/4 chords worksheet from class packet. Due Friday of week 7.

WEEK 8: melodic and harmonic sequences continued. Compositional activities

Homework: Composition assignment: 12-measure solo classical guitar composition in ABA' form. It can be tonal or modal (Ionian mode) Time Signature: 4/4. Key: either key of G, D, A, or E major. Three voices: bass, melody (top voice) middle voice. You must use non-harmonic tones, including suspensions. Follow registers of bass line and melody as outlined in class.
     A section ends on any cadence other that a PAC
     B section is a harmonic and melodic sequence. Can be in  original key or relative minor key.
     A' section repeats and embellishes the A melody and ends on a PAC

You must provide a full analysis: list key, pop chord symbols, Roman numerals and figured bass. Circle and label all NHT's. Label all cadences. Identify the harmonic sequence and melodic sequence with brackets. Due Monday of Week 9.


WEEK 9: motives, sentences, and periods

Read: Kostka chapter 10. pgs-150-170

Ear-training: interval test sometime week 9. All melodic intervals through an octave.
